Assignment #8

Due Tuesday 11/9

From text (Farlow, Partial Differential Equations for Scientists and Engineers):

Exercise I: Solve the following initial and boundary value problem by separation of variables:
      PDE     c2  utt = uxx
      BCs       u(0,t)=0,   u(L,t)=0
       ICs        u(x,0) = 0,   ut(x,0)=g(x)

Exercise II:
Solve the following initial and boundary value problem by separation of variables:
      PDE       utt = uxx
      BCs       u(0,t)=0,   ux(1,t)=0
       ICs        u(x,0) = 5 cos((pi/2) x),   ut(x,0)=0

Sketch u(x,t) at several times.  Give a physical interpretation to the result (especially to the BCs).
