COURSE LOGISTICS
This course meets one day a week for one hour. This hour will be used
in a variety of ways. Sometimes we will give practice lectures.
Sometimes we will discuss a specific topic related to teaching
mathematics and statistics or to being a TA. Class participation is
important. Failure to participate will result in a grade of F for the
course. Failure to participate includes, but is not limited to, the
following: 1. more than two absences, 2. consistently poor
participation in class discussions, 3. consistently coming to class
unprepared. A tentative schedule of topics is listed at the end.
The course is graded Pass/Fail.
COURSE CONTENT
We will cover a variety of issues related to teaching
mathematics in a university setting. These will include university
regulations, class and lecture organization, exams and syllabi,
grading, time management, and interaction with students. We will
also discuss issues related specifically to UAF and DMS TA's such as
the Math Lab, calculus recitations, grading assingments, use of
technology, and departmental policies and expectations.
The goal of the course is to provide our graduate students (you) with
specific information and guidance related the their responsiblities as
teaching assistants and more generally to teach our students about some
of the fundamentals of teaching mathematics at the university level.
The course is also a forum for discussion of teaching or teaching
related issues that may arise for our students (you) during the
semester.
Tentative Weekly Schedule
week 1: Introduction; Departmental and University Policies (graduate
student triage)
week 2: Grading Issues (Making The Grade and Seeking Points)
week 3: Calculus Recitations (The Quicksand of Problem Four)
week 4: Exams and Syllabi (Studying the Exam)
week 5: Top Ten Habits of a Good Lecturer
weeks 6-8: short practice lectures based on week 4 list
week 9: Cheating (Emily's Test)
weeks 10-13: long lectures (20 minutes)
week 14: Attitudes and Expectations (Changing Sections and or Study
Habits)
MISCELLANEOUS OTHER POLICIES
Departmental Policies
Incomplete Grade
Incomplete (I) will only be given in Mathematics or
Statistics courses in cases where the student has completed the
majority
(normally all but the last three weeks) of a course with a grade of C
or
better, but for personal reasons beyond his/her control has been unable
to
complete the course during the regular term. Negligence or indifference
are not
acceptable reasons for the granting of an incomplete grade.
Late Withdrawals
A withdrawal after the deadline (currently 9 weeks into the semester)
from a
DMS course will normally be granted only in cases where the student is
performing satisfactorily (i.e., C or better) in a course, but has
exceptional
reasons, beyond his/her control, for being unable to complete the
course. These
exceptional reasons should be detailed in writing to the instructor,
department
head and dean.
Disabilities Services: The Office of Disability
Services
implements
the Americans with Disabilities Act and insures that UAF students have
equal
access to the campus and course materials. I will work with the Office
of
Disabilities Services (203 WHIT, 474-7043) to provide reasonable
accommodation
to students with disabilities.
Academic Dishonesty:
Academic dishonesty, including cheating
and
plagiarism, will not be tolerated. It is a violation of the Student
Code of Conduct and will be punished according to UAF procedures.
